LUBBOCK TX-- School is out and summer is in full swing for kids. The South Plains Food Service is offering a special summer program for children. Today the volunteer work kicks off.

The program is offering aid to children who do not have access to meals during the summer. The food bank hopes to assist school aged children who are on free and reduced lunch during the academic year.

David Weaver, CEO of South Plains Food Bank, is coordinating the food service sites at locations where kids can easily access.

"Kids can have a fun time and they can also be eating," said Weaver. "What we've found is that it's hard to be happy and hopeful if you're hungry."

The food bank is working with churches, social service groups, community centers and school districts to help kids have healthy and nutritious meals.

Weaver encourages parents of kids to be aware that there are some helpful resources provided for them during this summer vacation.

"Having that food avaliable for the kids will make a difference for them," said Weaver.
