Change or clean the air filters in your HVAC system at least once a month. Set your thermostat to "auto" instead of keeping it "on" all day. During the warmest and sunniest times of the day, draw the shades and curtains to block the sun from entering - and heating - your home. Use your ceiling fans to cool off at times instead of the air conditioning system. Replace standard lightbulbs with CFLs. Use motion-detector lights for your outdoor lighting. When possible, use a microwave or toaster oven to heat food instead of the oven. Dust behind your refrigerator to remove dust from the coils. Try to do several loads of laundry at once. Instead of doing one load a day, where the washer and dryer cool between uses, doing it in the same day will use less energy. Wash full loads of laundry. It will require less loads than if you wash smaller loads. Use the right burner for the size of the pot to prevent using too much energy on a smaller pot or pan. Plug your electronics into a power strip that can be turned on and off as needed. Use a laptop instead of a desktop computer, as it uses less energy.
