Tech Falters in Game 1 Against Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan.Josh Allman and Preston Land had three RBIs each, powering Kansas to a 9-5 victory over Texas Tech on a cold Friday afternoon in front of 611 fans at Hoglund Ballpark.

With the loss, the Red Raiders drop to .500 overall at 17-17 and 4-9 in Big 12 play, while Kansas improves to 20-16 and 2-8 in conference.

The Jayhawks would get on the board first off a Robby Price RBI double that was quickly followed by a John Allman two-run home run. The blast was Allman’s third of the season.

After allowing another run in the second, Joey Kenworthy would get the Red Raiders on the board in the top of the third on a two RBI single through the left side. Kenworthy now has five multiple-RBI games this year.

Following another run in the bottom of the third, the Jayhawks chased Tech starter Nathan Karns after only 2 1/3 innings and five runs. Cory Large would come in relief and pitch three innings, allowing only one hit and a run.

Tech would inch closer in the seventh, as the Red Raiders would load the bases for Willie Rueda, who responded with a two-RBI single through the right side, plating Monk Kreder and Taylor Ashby. Junior Roger Kieschnick would have an opportunity to tie the game with runners on first and third with two outs, but his hard grounder was stopped by Jayhawk second baseman Robby Price to end the inning.

Kansas would quickly respond, however, plating four runs in the bottom half of the seventh with three coming from Preston Land’s fourth home run of the season off Tech reliever James Leverton.

Doug Thennis would hit his sixth home run of the season to leadoff the eighth inning, smashing a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall. Two batters later, Jason Seefeld would double down the left field line and Monk Kreder would follow with a walk. The inning would quickly come to a close, though, as Taylor Ashby would strikeout and Chris Hall would ground to short, forcing Kreder out at second.

Karns was hit with the loss, dropping him to 1-6 on the season, while Kansas Starter Nick Czyz improves to 2-3 after going 6 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out seven Red Raiders.

The Red Raiders and Jayhawks resume play tomorrow afternoon, beginning at noon. The game will be aired nationally on Fox Sports Net.
