"We ask people to wear cotton anywhere they go, but most importantly to this game," said Mary Jane Buerkle, Director of Communications at Plains Cotton Growers.

She says they are excited to showcase their industry at the “Celebrate Cotton” game this weekend.

"It really does do so much for our industry, and with this being family weekend especially its a neat way for us to tell as many people as possible our story and just how important cotton is here in the high plains but also to the state and to our nation," said Buerkle.

This is the second year Texas Tech Athletics has partnered with the cotton industry to put on this game. Director of Promotions and Fan Engagement Elvis Moya says they’re asking their sellout crowd to wear white, cotton shirts to the game.

"We are really excitred about all the pride and pagentry that surrounds it, including the white we are asking fans to wear during the game to help celebrate that West Texas spirit," said Moya.

Moya says fans should arrive early to take in all the fan activities the "Celebrate Cotton" game will offer.

"We are looking forward to having all kinds of displays as well as equipment outside our stadiums as well as some different fanfest area festivities which include free posters, t-shirts for the first 5,000 fans and some different give-aways," he said.

Buerkle says this game celebrates cotton growers, retailers and everyone in between.

"Certainly there are other pillars of the economy here in Lubbock whether its the medical community or higher education, but agriculture really is the lifeblood, the backbone of all of that. And you can ask any retailer around town and they will tell you just how important cotton is to what they do on down the line," she said.

Buerkle says even if you dont have your ticket to the sold out game, they will have plenty of vendors outside the gates so you can still try to win prizes and learn a lot about cotton.
