The only farmer in the race for Texas Ag Commissioner made a stop in the Hub City Tuesday.
Currently J Allen Carnes is the mayor of Uvalde, a town just west of San Antonio.
He also manages more than 1-thousand acres of farmland in Texas.
Carnes says he's concerned about the aging ag community and the growing loss of ag land in Texas.
Carnes says, "We have to create an environment that encourages young people to come into our industry and entices people to hold on to some of the ag land we've had in the past. You know, Texas is going to double in population in the next 50 years. That means the consumer base is going to double in population so the opportunity to sell goods and services out of Texas, out of rural Texas is going to grow. So, we have huge opportunities in agriculture. We just have huge challenges we have to overcome to get there ."
