AND BREAKS DOWN WHAT IT MEANS, TO BE DIABETIC.
We tell them what diabetes is, we tell them what to eat, we talk about what to do when you're sick, we talk about when to see a doctor, we talk about all kinds of stuff... just kind of explaining even the basics of diabetes.
IT'S PART OF COVENANT'S COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM...
GEARED TOWARD THE UNINSURED, THOSE WITH MEDICAID, OR ANYONE ELSE WHO MIGHT HAVE TROUBLE PAYING FOR CLASS.
We do know that there is more diabetes in the community, and it just keeps increasing, the numbers. So this is one of the things that we're doing to try and help people.
AND HELPING HERE, GOES BEYOND JUST THIS DISEASE.
People with diabetes are at a much higher risk of developing heart problems, strokes...
One is, people are eating too much so they're overweight. The other thing is, people are not being very physically active. And that's a big deal as well.
SO IN THE CLASS -- PARTICIPANTS ARE ARMED WITH ALL THE KNOWLEDGE THEY NEED...
EVEN IF IT'S JUST A MEANS TO DEAL *EMOTIONALLY WITH THE DISEASE.
CRANE SAYS IT'S COMMON TO FEEL DEPRESSED AFTER DIAGNOSIS.
I've had people say, you saved my life before. I don't know if I actually have or not, but they're very excited because they've gotten a lot more information that they just haven't known.
