LUBBOCK , TX —An 8-year-old boy died tragically in a car accident on the evening of the Fourth of July. The accident occurred on the 5500 block of Spur 327, where an S-U-V struck an 1989 Corolla parked along the access road with mechanical problems.

The driver and mother of the 8-year-old boy, Roberta Camacho, was taken to University Medical Center with moderate injuries. Mark Castro, however, was taken to Covenant Women’s and Children’s ER where he was later pronounced dead.
Geneva Corona, Mark’s grandmother spoke with us about the tragedy. “We were just very blessed to have had him, the eight years we had him, because he filled our life with a lot of love,” Geneva said.
Corona said her grandson loved swimming, horseback riding, and tacos, and that he aspired to be a firefighter.
We also spoke with Mark’s father, Johnny Jamez Castro, who was with his son when he passed away. “I saw everything from the accident to him taking his last breath of life, you know, everything,” Castro said. “So it’s something that I have to deal with from here on out."

The Castro family has set up a fund through Wells Fargo under the name “Mark Castro and Geneva Corona” to cover Mark Castro’s funeral expenses.
