The Flatland Film Festival showcases short films from all over the world and the Louise Hopkins Center for the Arts' Tonja Hagy said they got over 60 film submissions this year.

"And this year we actually received entries from over 16 countries so it is literally an international shorts film competition."

This years films include “The Retrieval”, a story of a boy sent north during the civil war to find a wanted man and two music based films. “This Ain’t no Mouse Music”, a documentary about Roots Music and “All the Labor” following the band “The Gourds” through Austin.

LHUCA is also bringing back Metropolis Elektro, the classic silent film set to modern music from an orchestra made by local music makers Scott and Amy Faris.

Hagy said you can see one or all of them and then pick your favorite.

"If you come to the shorts competition you will have a chance to vote on the audience choice which is always really fun because it's audience driven and you get to interact."

You can buy individual tickets to the shows or get the festival pass that will also get you into after parties and Hagy said you also get some one on one time with the festival filmmakers.

"The pass affords you the opportunity to not only have some fun and go to some cool after parties, and go to all the screenings, but to really have a one on one conversation with people in the industry that we are bringing in."

It’s short films and a small venue but Hagy said the experience is a big one.

"All of these films have screened at much larger festivals in much larger markets so its a chance for people to come and really get that that big film festival experience right here in Lubbock."

The first night of the Flatland Film Festival is Thursday the 17th and there will be screenings each day through Sunday.
