ABERNATHY, TX -- An early morning house fire Wednesday in Abernathy is under investigation at the intersection of 11th Street and Jerome.

When crews arrived, they found flames shooting from the windows. Four people, including two children and an elderly woman, made it out of the house, but they were taken to a Lubbock hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

On Wednesday afternoon the Lubbock-based South Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross said all four had been released from the hospital and were receiving help.

“They really did lose everything,” said Tiffany Downing, Red Cross spokesperson. “So, it was important that the Red Cross was there for them.”

Downing said the family was provided food, clothing, shoes and a safe place to say. Investigators say the cause of the fire is under investigation, but it could have been an electrical issue.
