LUBBOCK, TX-15 year old Keaton Robin wants to be an Eagle Scout.
“I am three away from getting it,” Robin said.
Three badges are standing in his way.
“Its personal fitness, personal management, and citizenship in the community,” Robin said.
It's something he has been working his whole life for.
“It is probably the hardest one to get out of all of them combined because of all the time, work and effort put in to it,” Robin said.
Now that he's finished his community service project, he's one step closer.
“We are extremely grateful to Keaton for all that he has done,” Melissa Velez said.
Velez is an administrator for Children's Hope in Levelland.
“We are a residential treatment center that provides 24/7 care for kids that have been removed from their homes basically due to abuse and neglect,” Velez said.
Children's hope is a non-profit organization.
They operate out of a renovated elementary school.
“They live here round the clock,” Velez said. “They have a structured program that they follow, and they also receive individual and group therapy.”
The building functions, but it's not fun.
That is where robin stepped in.
For his community service project, robin built a game room for the 24 girls and 24 boys at children's hope.
“It’s probably actually been a year for us to build this,” Robin said.
Robin raised more than $1,000 through garage sales and fundraisers, and then spent every weekend for the past year, with his fellow boy scouts working on the room.
“A good portion of the community helped me,” Robin said.
Robin said he wanted to finish the room before Spring break, so the kids would have something to do while they are out of school.
But Velez said the room is something her kids can enjoy long after Spring break.
“We are just extremely grateful to him, his parents, his family, the other scouts that helped out with getting the donations for the room and putting it all together,” Velez said. “We are really impressed and we can’t wait to show the kids.”
