The Levelland Police Department requested assistance from the Lubbock Police Department in serving a warrant on a suspect charged with aggravated assault and a parole violation.
Two LPD officers arrived on the scene around 3:30 Friday morning. They found the man they believed to be the 27-year-old Jose Juan Ortega II, inside of a home at 312 54th street. The officers tried to arrest the Ortega, but a brief struggle ensued during which police say the suspect fired a shot in close proximity to the officers. According to police, officer Gerardo Torres, 35, returned fire and struck the suspect in the torso.
Neither officer suffered a gunshot wound. Both the suspect and Officer Torres were taken to UMC. Ortega is in critical condition with possible life-threatening injuries.
Once Ortega was deemed stable enough, the Lubbock PD officially arrested him and charged him with attempted capital murder. He's also being held on the two other felony charges he was originally sought for, aggravated assault and a parole violation.
Jose Juan Ortega II has also been arrested in the past for burglary of a habitation and possession of an illegal weapon in the same category as brass knuckles and switch blades.
