New Deal Independent School District said they are feeling more comfortable lately, after allowing certain employees on campus to carry firearms.

The district is too small to have a police force, but Superintendent Jimmy Noland said they are doing everything possible to keep their students safe.

The program started two years ago, and employees volunteered to carry a concealed handgun on campus.

Each employee went through a psychological evaluation and extensive training.

Although, not all employees who volunteered were allowed permission to carry.

Noland said the employees are there to help fill the time gap between an emergency situation, and the time first responders can make it to the building.

Noland said the program started before Texas passed the bill allowing Marshal's in Texas schools.

Noland also said, he hopes never to have to call for those employees.
