LUBBOCK, TX -- A baffling virus, that has already killed millions of baby pigs, is driving up the price of pork and putting local restaurants in a bind.
"Bacon prices have gone up a dollar a pound," said Rick Green, the owner of the Red Zone Cafe. "I'll bite the bullet for a while, but there will be a time when we do raise the prices."
You'll not only have to reach deeper into your pockets for pork at restaurants, but at grocery stores and meat markets, too all because of a rapidly spreading virus called Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea.
Researchers aren't sure where the virus came from but they do know what it is doing.
"It's killing off baby pigs," said Dr. Bud Farr, a veterinarian. "It's like 100% mortality in a liter of pigs so when you have less of a population to feed the people then the price is going to go up."
Scientists are currently working on a vaccine for the pigs, but have yet to come up with one.
