LUBBOCK,TX- Buckle Up, Texas.

A slogan we have all probably seen a million times, but its' words have never meant more to 53 year old James David Gordey.

The Slaton Man was heading east on Highway 84 Wednesday night, when he pulled his pickup to the shoulder.

When re-entering the highway DPS officials say Gordey was struck by a tractor trailer.

The trailer rolled over the top of Gordey's truck, trapping him inside.

It took first responders 30 minutes and the jaws of life to get Gordey out.

He was airlifted to UMC with serious injuries, primarily to his legs.

Sergeant Bryan Witt is with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

He said the reason Gordey is a live is because of his seat belt.

"We believe that both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, which probably saved their lives," Witt said. "Vehicles are designed to protect the occupants and driver in a collision. So the best thing that happened to him last night is that he stayed inside the vehicle where all the protection was."

The driver of the semi was not injured.
