LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 25 Texas Tech went scoreless during the final six innings while Stephen F. Austin scored three runs in the final two frames to take the midweek series finale over the Red Raiders, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
The Red Raiders (17-6) had their 14-game home winning streak snapped while also having their 10-game winning streak snapped at home during midweek games.
Stephen F. Austin (9-10) finished with 12 base hits while four relievers combined to pitch six shutout innings with just one hit allowed and six strikeouts.
Sophomore right-handed reliever Johnathon Tripp (0-1) took his first loss of the season allowing the eventual game-winning run on base in the eighth inning on a double to left field. The following batter, designated hitter Mackenzie Handel, hit a two-run homer over the right field wall against Tech right-handed reliever Ryan Moseley to give the Lumberjacks a 5-3 lead.
SFA reliever Dillon Mangham (3-2) pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout to earn the victory.
Freshman center fielder Stephen Smith led the Red Raiders at the plate going 3-for-5 with a run scored while finishing the midweek series batting .727 (8-for-11).
Senior Adam Kirsch went 0-for-3 while having his reaching base safely streak snapped at 20 consecutive games. Senior third baseman Jake Barrios went 0-for-4 at the plate as his eight-game hit streak came to an end.
Sophomore first baseman Eric Gutierrez went 1-for-2 with a run scored and RBI while hitting his third home run of the season (10th career) giving Tech a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
That would be the final lead Tech would have as SFA tied the game in the sixth and then scored two in the eighth on Handel’s second home run of the midweek series and one in the ninth inning.
Tech freshman left-handed pitcher Dylan Dusek started his fourth straight home midweek game while earning a no decision after pitching five innings allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Dusek has nine strikeouts this season while allowing just one walk in 19.2 innings on the mound.
Texas Tech will be back in Big 12 play this weekend traveling to Fort Worth, Texas to take on TCU for a Friday, Saturday and Sunday series (Mar. 21-23) at Lupton Stadium. The series opener is scheduled for Friday, Mar. 21 at 6:30 p.m. The middle game is set for Saturday at 4 p.m. while Sunday’s series finale at 1 p.m. will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest Plus.
