The Silent Wings Museum is opening their doors to on Veterans Day and Lisa Howe, Silent Wings Education Coordinator, said it's important to honor service men and women.
"Our service members are a very important part of America and our American society and being able to be a free country relies really heavily on the abilities of our armed forces sometimes. So this is a way to recognize their contribution to society."
Howe said in addition to the museum exhibits there will be activities throughout the day.
"We'll have the color guard present the colors. The mayor will be here and he'll read the presidential proclamation for this year veterans day and then we'll have an elementary school, Wester Elementary, is going to be here and they will sing some songs."
You can also learn how different parts of the US celebrate veterans day.
"Throughout the day we'll have a documentary called 'Arlington Field of Honor' and it's about different ways around the country that people honor our veterans."
At night there will be music and food for veterans to mingle with one another.
"Jazz Alley will play some jazz music and some 1940's music and then we'll have hors d'oeuvres in the evening."
And all the exhibits and activities are free.
"So if you're a veteran, a friend of a veteran, a family member of a veteran. know an active duty soldier it's a time to really commemorate and celebrate the service that our veterans and active duty solders have done."
All the events listed below are free:
10 a.m.: Doors open, free admission, coffee & donut breakfast provided by the Salvation Army
11 a.m.: Morning Ceremony; presentation of the colors by the ROTC of Estacado High School, The Honorable Mayor Glen Robertson speaks, a pinning ceremony by Odyssey Hospice and music by students from Wester Elementary.
2 p.m.: Toys Go To War Gallery Talk by Donald Abbe, Ph.D.
5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.: Evening Reception begins, Special Guest Speaker LCDR Barent N. McCool, USN, Live Swing Music by Jazz Alley & Light Hors D’oeuvres
