The most notable addition is nose guard Rika Levi, who started practice at 348 pounds.
The 6-2 transfer from College of San Mateo is part of trio of junior college players defensive line coach John Scott has to work with this season.
"It's going to be good," Scott said. "The big guys we brought in are all athletic. I know Sam Eguavoen likes those bigger nose guards because they keep (offensive lineman) off him."
Levi is joined by Marcus Smith (Highland Community College) and Keland McElrath (Coahoma Community College). Both players tip the scales at more than 310 pounds.
"Our defensive line is a force," junior defensive end Branden Jackson said. "It's something to be recognized and the size is tremendously greater than last year."
Texas Tech coaches get their first chance to see the defensive line in a game situation on Sunday when the team holds its first scrimmage of preseason workouts.
