LUBBOCK, Texas – Gretchen Aucoin pitched six solid innings Sunday afternoon as Texas Tech opened the final day of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic with a 9-1 run-rule victory over Northern Colorado at Rocky Johnson Field.
The victory extended Tech’s season-long winning streak to seven games entering the tournament finale this afternoon against Abilene Christian. It was the second time this weekend and the third this season that the Red Raiders (17-6) had topped the Bears (4-21).
Aucoin (5-2) tossed her second complete game of the season as the right-hander allowed just one run off four hits while striking out six. The victory marked Aucoin’s second of the weekend as she also earned the win Friday evening against New Mexico State.
Northern Colorado picked up its only run in the fifth off a Molly Ryan solo home run that was her third of the season. The solo shot cut Tech’s lead to 3-1 before the Red Raiders answered with one run in the bottom half and then five in the sixth that ended the game.
Tech totaled a pair of home runs of its own with a solo blast to lead off the third from Sydnie Tapia and then a three-run homer from Sydni Emanuel that ended the game in walk-off fashion. It was the third homer already this year for Tapia and the second for Emanuel.
Emanuel finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored for her team-leading 10th multiple-hit game this season. She also stole a pair of bases, giving her 18 already through 23 games.
Her home run in the sixth followed a two-run double from Brittany Lee, who recorded her third multiple-RBI game of the season with the hit. Lee scored Kierra Miles and Lea Hopson on the hit that was set up by a Sarah Weber infield single that loaded the bases.
Miles also went 2-for-3 with a RBI for the Red Raiders as she connected on a RBI double in the fourth that scored pinch runner Brooke Scott who was running in place of Cassie McClure.
McClure drove in Tech’s first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Emanuel in the first inning. The RBI marked the 12th time already this season where the Red Raiders scored in the opening frame.
Megan Wilkinson (2-8) took the loss for Northern Colorado after allowing six runs, five of which were earned, off eight hits in 3.1 innings of work. She was relieved by both Jayme Reddacliff and Mikayla Duffy, who combined to allow three runs off just one hit over the final two innings.
