LUBBOCK, Texas – Lady Raider head coach Todd Petty has definitely left his mark on the Texas Tech women’s tennis program over the last six seasons. In the last three years, Petty has led the Lady Raiders to a pair of Big 12 Conference regular season titles and three straight trips to the NCAA Championships.
The 2014-15 Lady Raider schedule will feature the Lady Raiders appearing in 10 different states, from Florida to California. Petty, who has already elevated the program, took another step up the ladder on Tuesday when he announced this season’s schedule.
Texas Tech may have its toughest schedule in program history, as the Lady Raiders will face a possible 15 schools that advanced to the NCAA Championships last season. On top of that, Texas Tech’s schedule features 21 potential opponents that were ranked in the ITA Top 75 last season.
The Lady Raiders begin the fall season on Sept. 12 at the prestigious Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational just down the road in Midland. The fall also features trips to Oklahoma, Purdue and Ole Miss, while garnering national and regional competition at the ITA All-American, the USTA Clay Court Invitational and the ITA Texas Regional.
The Lady Raiders will open the spring at the Michigan Invitational, a hidden duals event in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Jan. 16.
Dual match play begins in Atlanta, Ga., as Texas Tech squares off with Oklahoma State in the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 23. The Lady Raiders will then face either Georgia Tech or Columbia, both 2014 NCAA Championship participants, on the second day. The winner of the four-team event will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Texas Tech will kickoff the home season on Jan. 30, as the Lady Raiders host Wyoming and Auburn at the McLeod Tennis Center. It is the first of six straight home matches, as the Lady Raiders host Ole Miss (Feb. 6), Rice (Feb. 8), Memphis (Feb. 12) and Utah (Feb. 14).
The Lady Raiders have been invited back to the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, which features a field of Alabama, Boise State, DePaul, Ohio State, Princeton, Tulane, Yale and Texas Tech. The three-day event features six teams ranked in the ITA Top 50.
Texas Tech will close out non-conference play on March 6, as the Lady Raiders host a day-night doubleheader against Wichita State and Louisiana Tech.
Big 12 Conference play opens with road trips to Kansas (March 13), Kansas State (March 15) and Texas (March 22). The Lady Raiders return home to host five straight against Oklahoma, (March 27), Oklahoma State (March (29), Baylor (Apr. 4), West Virginia (Apr. 10) and Iowa State (Apr. 12).
Texas Tech closes out the schedule in Fort Worth at TCU on Apr. 18.
The Lady Raiders feature five players off of last season’s NCAA Tournament team, led by sophomore Lynn Kiro, who was 29-6 last season and set a school record by winning sixteen straight singles matches to close out the season. Also figuring in the mix are seniors Kenna Kilgo and Sarah Toti.
Four new Lady Raiders are expected to make an impact, as the quartet was named the No. 14 recruiting class in the nation. It is the highest-ranked class in program history.
Petty's class featured a pair of five-star recruits in Hawaii native Sarah Dvorak and Katelyn Jackson out of Arkansas, along with two international prospects in Hortense Boscher (France) and Sabrina Federici (England).
