LUBBOCK, TX -- An early morning crash at US 87 and FM 41 in Lubbock left three dead and one in the hospital after semi-trailer hit a van head on.

DPS Sergeant Bryan Witt said the semi-truck was carrying highly-flammable ethanol. Witt also said the Woodrow Volunteer Fire Department was not able to control the fire and the only choice officials had was to let the ethanol burn itself out.

Bobby Wilson lives down the road from the crash site and said he watched the flames burn up for hours.

Wilson and the gas station attendant at the Phillips at the intersection, Ann Lacey, said they want an overpass built at that intersection or some type of flashing lights on the stop signs to stop these fatal accidents.

Odessa Hazmat is removing ethanol soaked soil from the side of the road and TXDot is repaving a section of road that was badly damaged while the semi truck and van burned for 6 hours.

Even eight hours later officials were saying to avoid the intersection as crews work to clear the accident scene.

At this time the name of the semi-truck driver and the 3 van passengers have not bee released.

The Texas Department of transportation issued the following statement just after 4:30 pm.
