Officials expect fewer new cases of West Nile Virus with colder weather.  The City of Lubbock has confirmed one death from the virus during 2013.  According to the Department of State Health Services, Lubbock County has also reported four other cases of WNV that were not fatal.

Floyd and Gaines Counties have each reported one death respectively.  So, three of the state’s six fatalities have come from the South Plains. People can only get West Nile from the bite of an infected mosquito.  Five mosquitoes have tested positive for WNV in Lubbock during 2013.
