LUBBOCK, TX -- After years of looking at empty land and hearing empty promises, three Vintage Township families are taking blueprints into their own hands and say all of Lubbock will benefit.
Joshua Allen, like most other residents in the South Lubbock neighborhood off 114th and Quaker, said when he moved in six years ago he was told the land around Vintage would be developed into more parks, restaurants and shops.
"That never happened," said Allen. "We don't really have this nice entrance like other neighborhoods."
To turn the intersection into one like 98th and Quaker, Allen, two other Vintage families, and investors are buying, re-zoning and building on the 30-acre lot.
"I was talking to a neighbor at the park like, 'what is ever going to happen with that,'" said Allen. "Then it was like we're just going to jump off and do this ourselves and give it a shot."
Allen and other residents will attend a rezoning meeting, Thursday, where he expects to receive approval on turning the land from residential to garden office. Brick office buildings would be built at Quaker Avenue and Salisbury and at the Northeast end of the neighborhood off 114th Street. With that transition, traffic would increase very little, but the economy would benefit a great deal, according to Allen.
"It would definitely boost our economy, more jobs, more sales tax," said Allen. "And I would like to have just another convenient place.
Allen also plans to develop two lakes, a jogging path, potential restaurants and shops.
If the rezoning is accepted, Allen expects building to start in the next year.
