LUBBOCK, TX -- Angry residents of Wilson are hosting a town hall meeting Wednesday night, to protest what they call the "unjust" dismissals of six Wilson I.S.D. teachers.

"We have two on paid leave, two who did go ahead and resign [after being pressured] and a couple who resigned on their own," according to Kenneth Kendrick, whose granddaughter attends Wilson. "Now, we're talking about a school district with about 140 students. So six teachers, that's about 40 percent of our teaching staff."

Earlier this month, the school board voted not to renew a handful of teacher contracts. But coincidentally, protesters say those same teachers had all tried to file grievances against the administration earlier in the school year.

"Well obviously, if you don't want to have a grievance process, and you're suppressing it, then you have something to hide," Kendrick says. "And we want to know what it is they have to hide."

In a brief conversation with Superintendent Russell Schaub Wednesday afternoon, he couldn't give us a specific reason as to why those teachers were dismissed.

"I don't really want to go into detail, but, we had situations that day that I felt like weren't in the best interest of the district," Schaub says. "So, we made that move."

The protesters fear it may be too late to get these teachers their jobs back But they hope that raising their voices may at least unseat those responsible.

"We are going to fight for the justice of these teachers, and we're going to try and find a quick, legal remedy to get rid of this school administration," Kendrick says.

The meeting will take place at 8 PM at the Wilson Town Hall. Letters of grievances written by the teachers will be read aloud, but Kendrick says none of the teachers themselves will be stepping forward, in fear of further retaliation from the administration.
