LUBBOCK, TX - Our own Lauren Matter is helping to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation by dancing in this year's Waltzing for Wishes gala.
You may know Lauren as the smart, talented and often funny anchor behind the desk at KAMC News. She's stepping out of her comfort zone quite literally for the next few months as she learns how to Foxtrot.
She's in great hands because her dance partner has quite a bit of experience.
"I've been dancing since I was about 13. I was in seventh grade during spring break. My parents wanted me to try it, and I stayed in it," said Edgar Martinez, Lauren's dance partner.
Don't worry: Lauren has some experience, too.
"When I was little, I did ballet. I was 2 or 3 years old when I did ballet," said Lauren.
All grown up now, it's time to tackle the Foxtrot.
"We've gotten about 30 seconds done. It's a lot. It's intense. You have to learn all the right moves and make sure you're not stepping on toes," said Lauren.
"She's starting, so our intent is to get at least to the silver level. She's doing really well, especially for someone who doesn't have a background," said Edgar.
The ballroom dance is a smooth, continuous dance flowing across the dance floor, something Lauren's getting down.
"She has a really good attitude, just from the get-go, she's always really positive. She has the perfect attitude to tackle this head-on," said Edgar.
There are seven other contestants she'll be competing against. Though she is competitive, there's only one winner on competition night: the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
"I help the Make-A-Wish Foundation because it's such an important part of our community," Lauren said. "There are so many kids out there who are sick, and all they need is just this little thing to make sure feel better about themselves and that's what Make-A-Wish does. It is so good just to see what they do for the kids."
