LUBBOCK- Atmos officials said they're one of several companies being affected by a nationwide phishing scam, and if you're an Atmos Energy e-bill customer, you're at risk.

"It's pretty authentic. It looks very similar to the ones that go out from our website."

Marinda Heinrich with Atmos Energy says their customers should delete any emails they receive from the company because there's a good chance they may not be authentic.

"Just delete it. Don't even open it, and for sure don't click on any of the embedded links."

Just like the authentic e-bills, the fraudulent emails contain links for customers to pay their bill online, only these links won't take you to the Atmos website.

"It takes them to a fraudulent website that harbors malware and can affect their computers," said Heinrich.

Some of the emails reference a fake account number, but Heinrich says some of them may have your real one.

"Unless you know your account number by heart or you can reference it, you can't really tell. In fact, they may have your account number and it may reference the correct one. For the time being, even if you're getting the authentic emails from us- if you're an e-bill customer, what we recommend right now is don't click on any of the embedded links. Instead go to our website."

Though it's a very sneaky scam, Heinrich said customers shouldn't worry about their Atmos account information.

"None of their accounts have been affected. None of them have been compromised in any way."
