LUBBOCK, TX--- As the City of Lubbock is preparing to head into stage 2 water restrictions, the city codes department wants to remind residents to check their water sprinkler systems to avoid citations.

"I would say the first thing people need to figure out is how much water does that vegetation really need," said Stuart Walker with City Codes Ordinance.

"Since January 1st we've had about 1,200 complaints regarding sprinkler systems," said Walker. Five hundred of the complaints turned into violations.

"The majority of violations that the inspectors find in the neighborhood are things like people watering on the wrong day or a sprinkler system that may have a broken sprinkler head," said Walker. "If we don't get compliance, yes, we issue a citation."

A citation is at least $125.

Another issue inspectors are looking for is runoff water. Walker said significant amounts of runoff could result in a citation as well, and the City Council is considering heavier restrictions to include no runoff water.

If you think you've seen someone breaking water restriction rules, you're asked to call the City Code Ordinance Water Hotline at 775-3952.
