City One Step Closer to Tornado Sirens
LUBBOCK, TX--- The city of Lubbock is one step closer to gaining emergency alert systems for severe weather or other emergencies, like tornado sirens.
Something Councilman Todd Klein has been fighting for, because he's seen its what the people want.
"We need tornado sirens that's my position as a private citizen and as a policy maker," said Klein.
For months now, Councilman Klein has been at the forefront in getting Lubbock emergency alert systems.
"I think its prudent and affordable and very wise given our location. That we get those tornado sirens underway. I also believe in the very esence of who we work for."
In 2013 a tornado task force was put together to get more information.
Now the city has bids out for a sirens as well as mass alert systems.
Previously Sgt. Jason Lewis with Lubbock Police has even mentioned the importance of this capability.
"I know we were talking about the sirens for tornado sirens and things like that. Nixle is one of the things that we are also looking at because we can geographically pin point. Certain areas of the city to notify people of dangers in that area," said Lewis in an interview with KLBK about Police using social media to inform the public.
Klein says-- he hopes to see the city find a solution before spring tornado weather.
"It could be potentially a matter of life and death. In terms of front line defenses, and unfortunately the narative has been to date well the newest technology is the best technology," said Klein.
The bidding process for the lubbock alert system ends on February 6th.
Now Klein says he also hopes to see the alert systems appear on the next bond election.
The city has had multiple opportunities for Lubbock residents to give their input on this matter.
If nothing is done by the time Klein leaves office, this is likely an issue he said he will continue to push for until something is done after his term ends.
