LUBBOCK, TX -- In a meeting Monday, Lubbock County Commissioners approved almost $38,000 towards widening Woodrow Road and creating a right turn lane into Lubbock-Cooper High School.
"What we approved in court today is to consider a partnership to add a turning lane coming off of Tahoka highway turning into the school that will speed up traffic, speed up traffic flow, and we think make it safer, " said Precinct 1 Commissioner Bill McCay.
"It's one of our busiest intersections in the county and so when you combine the Lubbock-Cooper school traffic and a busy US highway, everything we can do to make it safer is what we are going to do," he said.
McCay says while the cost may sound high, they're actually getting a deal by partnering with TX DOT.
"Its about $40,000 but that's, what that really is is a discounted price with the current contractor what their cost is so its really a great price," said McCay.
"You know we have seen some accidents, of course Woodrow road is notorious for the collisions that we've had out here," said Lubbock Cooper ISD Police Chief Rick Saldana.
During his 15 years with the district, Saldana has seen his fair share of accidents on Woodrow Road.
"We have to keep in mind that these roads were actually to accommodate traffic back in the 80s when Lubbock-Cooper wasn't even a quarter of this size. So now with the growth we've noticed that Woodrow Road has to be expanded in order to accommodate the congestion that we are experiencing," said Saldana.
Saldana says these improvements come at a good time as Lubbock-Cooper continues to grow.
"We are very excited about it the state came in and installed the lights a couple of years ago and now that we were approved for the overpass we are even more excited about the fact that that's going to help us out as well," said Saldana.
Mccay says he hopes the lane expansion will be complete by the time school starts in the fall. The TX DOT overpass project is expected to be finished by early 2015.
