County Commissioners Vote on Proposed Raises for Elected Officials, Employees

LUBBOCK, TX -- At Monday's meeting, the Lubbock County Commissioners voted on proposed raises for both county employees as well as elected officials.

When looking at the proposed raises, the largest comes for the County Judge, which is Judge Tom Head. According to the list provided by Lubbock County, his salary would go from $77,450 to $109,925.

The county commissioners would also get a raise, from $57,600 to $75,185.

Also included on the list of raises for the upcoming year are county employees. Those employees will see a cost of living raise, as well as money for merit raises, something Commissioner Patti Jones said is determined by elected officials and department heads.

"If you want people to leave their professions in the private sector to come work for the county, and run for an office, you need to have some salaries that are at least, I don't even want to say comparable, but that you have a good salary set there to draw good leadership, to draw good people," Commissioner Jones said about elected officials.

The elected official positions, she said, are full time jobs. The county used a number of factors to determine how to decide the raises, including using LEDA information, Texas Industry Profiles, and others.

Commissioner Jones said they have only given raises four times in the last 12 years.

Commissioner Jones also said that it is not always an easy decision when it comes to raises. "We try to be as transparent as we can, we do our very best to realize and remember that we are dealing with tax payer money, not our money, and that to be as prudent as we know how to be," she said.

The commissioners still have to approve their final budget for the upcoming year, which will happen in September.

The Lubbock County Commissioners are in charge of a budget of more than $148 million, as well as more than 1,200 employees.
