LUBBOCK, TX - The Lubbock Meals on Wheels "Feed a Friend, It's As Easy As Pie" fundraiser has now reached $42,000, well more than half of their original goal of $65,000. Only a few days into this year's fundraiser, organizers say this is the strongest start they have seen in years.
This is the fundraiser's 26th year running, and aims to help the holiday season brighter for community members in need. Through Saturday, November 18 United customers and LMOW are encouraged to donate $5.00 to receive a coupon for a free Mrs. Smith's pie (pumpkin, sweet potato, berry, dutch apple, homestyle apple, peach or cherry).
How it works: when you go to check out at any United, Amigos, or Market Street location, ask you checker to add the $5.00 to the grocery total, and you'll receive a coupon. All of the proceeds go toward helping Meals on Wheels continue to feed the more than 720 residents here in Lubbock that they see everyday.
"And there's now 11 United Super Markets locations in Lubbock, so anywhere you live it's close to a United, so we hope everyone will go out," said Lisa Gilliland, executive director of Meals on Wheels. "It's just before Thanksgiving, you're out shopping anyway, make that donation, keep the coupon and support the people that we help out that are homebound, elderly and disabled."
The fundraiser runs through Saturday. In the meantime, MOW is still looking for more volunteers to help them not only at their location but as well as at the stores themselves.
