LUBBOCK, TX-- Former Mary & Mac Private School in East Lubbock is honored with a State Historical Marker.

County Commissioner Lorenzo "Bubba" Sedeño said this is an important dedication for the community.

"Mary & Mac is one of those historical legends in the East side," said Sedeño.

The institution was one of the first schools in the area to focus on Lubbock's African American community.

It was founded in 1954 by Lucille Graves as a pre-school at the New Hope Baptist Church. Overtime enrollment increased and the school began offering more classes, resulting in students receiving their high school diplomas.

The school closed in the 1990's and was honored at an unveiling ceremony on Friday.
