LUBBOCK, TX- The West Texas Democratic Party may not have candidates for every seat come the March 2014 primaries, but they’re optimistic about the candidates they do have.

"I think the races we've selected to focus on this cycle have vulnerable incumbents- incumbents that have embarrassed their constituents,” said Kenny Ketner chairman of the Lubbock County Democratic Party. “So that gives us an opportunity to show voters a real difference between the parties and show voters how we can restore honesty and integrity and credibility back to those offices."

Ketner said that they have no candidate running for the District 83 seat, currently held by republican Charles Perry.

"That’s a tough sell. It's a strong republican seat and it's a multi-county seat."

However, Ketner said they have strong candidates to challenge district 84's John Frullo and Lubbock County Judge, Tom Head.

Ketner said candidate recruitment has been tough in the past few years and this year was no different.

"I spoke to a lot of candidates who would've been excellent candidates but felt that this wasn't the right time right now. But my whole thing is- if you take that attitude too far, it's never the right time."

Lubbock is one of the most conservative areas in Texas.

But Tim Nokken, a political science professor at Texas Tech, said democrats can be successful if they focus on the right issues.

"Local issues,” said Nokken. “There are a lot of issues that effect everybody's day-to-day life that aren't republican or democrat. So talking about things like the quality of education- democrats and republicans both care about that. Talking about a normally republican issue- taxes and economic development. Democrats have stuff to offer in that respect."
