LUBBOCK, TX -- Lubbock Police Department said they do patrol parks at night to make sure they're not being used as a place for 'casual encounters'.

A call came in to the KLBK Newsroom from a concerned viewer saying she had taken her children to Prairie Dog Town over spring break, and when walking through the parking lot, saw what she said were people taking part in 'adult activities' in a car. She asked if KLBK had heard anything about this problem, and KLBK called LPD, who said it's something they've had to patrol over the years.

"Now that it's on social media, and they see it, and it's disturbing obviously to read, but, it's been something that we've dealt with forever," Sergeant Jason Lewis with Lubbock Police said. "And parks are a common place for people to meet for things they don't want to do at home whether that be drugs, or casual encounters."

Sergeant Lewis said they will patrol parks, especially at night, to make sure no one is doing anything illegal. City parks close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., so anyone found in a park between those hours could at least face a citation or ticket for being in the park, on top of any other potential tickets or charges from whatever else they are doing.

Sergeant Lewis, however, said this is not something he thinks has seen an increase in activity recently.

"I don't know that we've had any sort of an increase, I think this has just always been, and now there's just a different way to get it out, is through social media, which is more prevalent to people that wouldn't have known about it before, because they're not hanging out in the park after midnight, they're at home," Sergeant Lewis said.

Some people enjoying the weather in Mackenzie Park Monday told KLBK they weren't necessarily surprised to hear about these types of things going on in the park, though they would not want to visit at night. It did not stop them from wanting to continue to go to parks during the day.
