Multiple Volunteer Fire Departments Battle Cotton Fire

PETERSBURG, TX - Around 5:00 a.m. Thursday morning, several area volunteer fire departments responded to a cotton fire near Petersburg.

Hale Center, Abernathy, Petersburg, Lockney, Floydada, Idalou, Ralls and Lorenzo fire departments were all on scene.  Due to the dry and windy conditions, the fire is likely to smolder for days.

No injuries were reported, but fire crews said they will have to check on the fire periodically throughout the day to make sure it doesn't spread to any nearby properties.

According to the Texas A&M Forrest Service, Lubbock and much of the South Plains were at risk from high fire danger on Thursday.
