LUBBOCK, TX -- Nearly a dozen people spoke in front of a packed room to the Wilson ISD School Board after a few teachers were let go, some supporting the teachers, others supporting the school.
Some were there to show their support for teachers who were let go, including Michelle Story and Patricia Johnson. Both women claim their teaching contracts were not renewed after they raised concerns about the principal, and then they were banned from attending school functions. Both are parents as well.
"I think it's neat to see the support we have, I mean it's amazing to see a community come together like they have, and not just because they want to back us, but because they know the truth and they're standing up for what's right," Johnson said.
Others were at the meeting Tuesday night to support the superintendent and the school.
There were also attorneys for both sides at the meeting. Kevin Glasheen is representing Story and Johnson, while David Backus was there for the district.
Glasheen said he filed suit Tuesday in Lynn County, asking for a temporary injunction for Story and Johnson to be able to attend their children's events at the school.
Previously, Wilson ISD's Superintendent, Russell Schaub said the teachers were a disruption to the educational process, and he said that's why Story and Johnson were not allowed on school grounds or at school activities, about why they were banned while being on paid administrative leave.
"We've asked the school district through their attorney again and again to explain why these teachers were fired and why they were banned from campus and they won't tell us," Kevin Glasheen said.
"I suspect that we'll have success in defending any lawsuit that's being brought, the school administration has done nothing that's contrary to school law, done nothing to offend the rights of the teachers," David Backus said.
There is a hearing scheduled for April 22nd.
