LUBBOCk, TX -- A collaboration between Lubbock Power and Light and Catholic Family Services to help those who need help paying their bills.

It's called Project Helping Hand and it puts money into a fund for people to use when they have trouble paying.

"We saw, this past summer, with the adjustment of our rates, that many individuals came into a situation where they were having trouble paying their bills," Matt Rose, an LP&L spokesman said.

This year, Rose said they are not only talking to people about conservation, but they are also looking to get more people involved in Project Helping Hand. This is partially after what happened in 2013, when there was a rate increase on top of the annual change to summer rates. In June 2014, Rose said there will only be the annual change to the summer rate.

"The amount of individuals seeking assistance, appears to be right on line with where it has been every single year," Rose said.

Any LP&L customer can get involved by contacting LP&L and letting them know they would like to round up their bill to the next dollar amount, with that extra change going to Project Helping Hand.

"It's a very minimal amount for each individual customer, but collectively, we can do a lot of good," Rose said.

Earlier this year, Mayor Glen Robertson said all the funds from his State of the City address would go to Project Helping Hand. That was $6,000, and then the Lubbock Apartment Association, who help to put on the event, added another $4,000 to make it a total $10,000 donation to Project Helping Hand.

"Please do not wait until the very last minute because you may find yourself in a situation where people are ahead of you in line and you can't get the resources you need," Rose said.
