Ransom Canyon Leaving Dead Fish to Mother Nature
By Joshua Cole Little
LUBBOCK, TX--- A recent algae bloom in lakes and ponds all around the South Plains are causing fish to die. While some communities are cleaning them it, Ransom Canyon is not.
"I think the city gets called when this happens on a regular basis. The kill a few years ago was much more severe," says Mayor Pro Tem Jana Trew.
This 'fish kill' is nothing new to the area. The city sent out a message to its residents saying they will not be cleaning up the dead fish around the lake. Trew says the city is just letting nature take its course, wildlife in the area usually eat the fish and they are gone within a few weeks.
"Unless there is a health hazard with the fish laying around we generally let the animals take care of it and let the ecological system take its course," says Trew.
With no present hazard, its not a cost they are wanting to pay.
"If they're concerned i mean they can go out and push them into the water and they will sink if they need to clean it up just a little bit," says Trew.
Trew says Ransom Canyon has never had a problem big enough to bring cleaning crews to remove the fish in years past.
