LUBBOCK, TX -- Another business owner called KLBK after they received scam calls twice, from someone claiming to be with an LP&L collection agency.

Matt Brewer is co-owner of Alamo Barber Shop and said he got two calls in the last month or so, saying he owed money on his LP&L bill. The first time the call came, he called LP&L immediately, and was told his bill was paid in full.

"Got one, I'd say, about a month ago. and a guy called, telling us we were delinquent on our bill and so, we kind of questioned it cause we just go through paying our bills, so dad hung up the phone and he called LP&L, and sure enough the guy called back again, and we told him we weren't going to pay it, so he just hung up on us," Brewer said

Then, last week, Brewer said he got another call. He realized it was fake, called LP&L, but then decided to call the scammer back. The person on the other end of the phone didn't have any information on Brewer, other than a phone number, which was a big red flag to Brewer. He gave the man a fake address, and was still told he owed more than $300.

"I put him on hold for a little bit, I came back and asked, you know, 'How stupid do you think we are?'" Brewer said. That's when the man on the other end of the line dropped the act, according to Brewer.

"Finally, after I called him out again, he just started talking all kinds of trash to me, calling me everything in the book, then he just hung up on me," Brewer said.

Brewer said he was lucky he could see that this was a scam, though he understands how other people may panic in these situations and want to pay.

"We want to know about it, we want you to file a police report, we want to make notes so that we can work to hopefully bring these people to justice," Matt Rose, an LP&L spokesman said. "Because the last thing that we want to see is somebody taking advantage of our customers, and we're always going to make sure we do everything in our power, to help our customers through a situation like this."

Rose also said other utilities across the state are seeing similar scams.

Rose said they want to remind customers they do not use live callers to make courtesy calls about past due bills. They urge anyone who receives a call they think might be fake to get as much information from the caller as possible (name, number to call back on, who they work for, and any other details) and then hang up and call LP&L at (806)775-2509.
