PORTALES, NM - On Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at around 3:25 p.m. the Portales Police Department said officers responded to Taylor Tots Daycare along with EMS in reference to two children having seizures. One child at this time has died.
The Clovis, New Mexico Ninth Judicial District Attorney Andrea Reeb said Sandi Taylor, 31, and Mary E. Taylor, 67, drove two vans to a park with six kids in each van. A one-year-old and two-year-old were forgotten and left behind in one of the vans.
About an hour and a half later, one of the women received a phone call about paperwork and returned to the van. The two children were discovered and were not breathing.
The children were immediately given CPR and 911 was called.
The Portales Police Department said when officers arrived they found two children not breathing and aid was given. Both children were transported to Roosevelt General Hospital regarding a heat emergency. One child was later transferred to a Lubbock area hospital and the other was later pronounced dead at Roosevelt General Hospital.
Judicial District Attorney Reeb went said the body temperatures of the children were 109 degrees, and it was 91 degrees outside at the time.
Sandi Taylor and Mary E. Taylor were arrested and charged with child abuse resulting in great bodily harm and child abuse resulting in death. Both are being held without bond until their appearance before the Magistrate Judge.
The women are scheduled to appear for a pre-trial Thursday. Legal proceedings will then be moved to district court according to Judicial District Attorney Reeb.
The license for Taylor Tots Daycare has been suspended.
