14-Year-Old Arrested for Murder of Sonia Loera

LUBBOCK, TX (PRESS RELEASE) - The Lubbock Police Department has presented charges to the District Attorney’s Office for a 14-year-old juvenile in the murder of Sonia Loera. Those charges include murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

At this point our investigators have presented the charges, and it will be up to the DA’s Office to officially charge the juvenile.

On September 25th at approximately 2:34 a.m., patrol officers responded to a report of a hit and run crash with serious injuries near Club Pink, 510 North University Avenue. The driver of a stolen, red GMC Sierra pickup was traveling westbound on Erskine when it left the roadway and collided with a vehicle parked on the side of the road. The victim standing in front of the parked car, Sonia Loera, was struck. She was pronounced deceased as the scene. Two others, a man standing near the parked car and a woman inside the parked car, were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.

The driver of the stolen pickup fled the scene on foot and made no attempt to render aid.

Through evidence collected at the scene, our Accident Investigators were able to identify the driver of the stolen vehicle as the 14-year-old juvenile. The juvenile has been in custody since October 5th for the Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle in connection to the stolen pickup.

This is an ongoing case, and we will release more details as they become available.
