CASTRO COUNTY, TX (KAMR/KCIT) - The Castro County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call Sunday morning from the Parmer County Sheriff’s Office concerning a possible helicopter crash in Castro County.
Officials say the crash site was located in a wheat field approximately one half mile south of the 200 block of County Road 623.
The Castro County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the scene and conducted an investigation.
The pilot of the helicopter was identified as Donald Lee Oppliger, 68, of Amarillo. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Castro County Justice of the Peace Oreda Campbell.
An autopsy has been ordered.
The investigation into the crash is also being conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
