LUBBOCK, TX - A Lubbock grand jury indicted Stephen Buckley, Jr., 29, of Lubbock for the murder of Jose Luis Gomez in Wagner Park.
Police were called to the park on July 10 for the report of shots fired. When police arrived, someone was doing CPR on Gomez. He was later pronounced dead.
Eyewitnesses told police that Gomez was shot three or four times. Gomez and Buckley argued over possession of a backpack before shots were fired.
A police report said the suspect was already gone by the time police arrived at the park. But officers found a bloody cell phone. That cell phone then led them to Buckley.
Police were able to get an arrest warrant and Buckley was arrested by law enforcement in Levelland.
Buckley was booked into jail on July 12 and remained in the Lubbock County Detention Center Tuesday in lieu of a $300,000 bond.
