LUBBOCK, TX (NEWS RELEASE) - The following is a news release from Covenant Health:
Covenant Medical Center (CMC) earned a 4-star rating out of a possible 5 in overall hospital quality ratings contained in the new report by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMC’s high rating is above the national average of a 3 and shows improvement from CMS’ rating for CMC of 3 in 2016. Covenant Health Plainview and Covenant Health Levelland also improved to 4-star ratings in 2017, each up from 3 stars the previous year.
The improved rating is consistent with similar reported quality results this year from other national ranking agencies, validating Covenant Medical Center as the most respected and awarded hospital in Lubbock. US News and World Report’s latest Best Hospitals edition ranked CMC as the Best Hospital in the Panhandle Plains region and as one of the top 12 hospitals (or top 2 percent) in the entire State of Texas. Healthgrades awarded CMC the most five-star ratings of any hospital in Lubbock and the region. The Leapfrog Group recently awarded CMC a “B” grade on patient safety.
“Covenant Medical Center is the only tertiary referral center in the area that treats trauma and all types of complicated cases to receive such a high rating,” said Cynthia Salisbury, chief quality officer for Covenant Health. “We’re proud of all the providers in the area as our common goal is to provide top-quality, safe care to our community. I am especially proud of the continued improvement in quality and safety scores at all of our facilities, which goes to the dedication and ongoing commitment of our medical staff and caregivers.”
The CMS Star rating, available at www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare, reflects specific hospital performance on more than 50 quality metrics across seven areas: Mortality, Safety, Readmissions, Patient Experience, Effectiveness of Care, Timeliness of Care, and Efficient use of Medical Imaging. In addition to the Star rating, hospitals also receive a performance category rating for each of the seven areas: Above the National Average, Same as the National Average, or Below the National Average.
Covenant Medical Center scored the same as, or above the national average in five of the seven areas. It scored above the national average in the areas of Safety, Readmissions, and Patient Experience. It earned the same as national average ratings in Mortality and Timeliness of Care. The areas of Effectiveness of Care, and Effective Use of Medical Imaging scored below the national average.
Covenant Plainview’s improved, overall hospital rating of 4 out of 5 stars is better than the national average of 3 out of 5 stars. It earned a category rating above the national average in two domains: Safety and Patient Experience. It received a category rating as the same as the national average in four domains: Mortality, Effectiveness of Care, Timeliness of Care and Efficient use of Medical Imaging; it received a category ranking below the national average in only one domain, Readmissions.
Covenant Levelland’s improved overall hospital rating of 4 out of 5 stars also is better than the national average of 3 out of 5 stars. The hospital earned category ratings in five of the seven domains. The number of measures reported for Safety and for Efficient Use of Medical Imaging were insufficient to allow for calculation/assignment of a performance category in these two domains.
Covenant Levelland had no rankings below the national average and actually ranked above the national average on most ranked domains. It earned a category rating above national average in three of the five ranked domains: Readmissions, Patient Experience and Timeliness of Care; it received a category rating the same as the national average in Mortality and Effectiveness of Care.
The CMS Star ratings use Medicare and Medicaid data; the results are for adult patients only; Covenant Children’s is not included.
