Driver, Age 84, Dies Later After Morning Crash

SMYER, TX - The Texas Department of Public Safety said a crash Tuesday morning in Hockley County took the life of an 84-year-old woman.

DPS said Betty Yeary, 84, of Levelland was driving a car eastbound along State Highway 114 at Farm to Market Road 168 before 8:00 a.m.  She was trying to turn left.

DPS said, “She failed to yield the right of way to a GMC pickup traveling westbound on TX 114.”

Initially, DPS said the injuries were not life-threatening but then later in the day something changed.  At about 1:00 p.m., DPS released an update saying, “Due to complications … she passed away at Covenant [Medical Center].”

DPS said Yeary had passengers in the car who were ages 5, 11, and 13.  DPS initially said the children’s injuries were not life-threatening, and, so far, that information has not changed.

DPS said a second pickup crashed because of the first accident.  The two drivers of the pickup trucks were treated and released at the scene, according to DPS.
