SWEETWATER, TX -- Former Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham has announced he will run for the Texas Senate District 28 seat recently vacated by Robert Duncan.

According to the Sweetwater Reporter, Wortham resigned as Mayor of Sweetwater on Tuesday, July 8. Under Texas law, a local elected official has to resign in order to even campaign for a state legislative office if they have more than a year left on their term.

"I am going to run for the District 28 Texas Senate seat just vacated by Senator Robert Duncan, who resigned last week to become the Chancellor of Texas Tech University," Wortham told the Sweetwater Reporter last week.

Wortham had been the Mayor of Sweetwater since 2007. He says he will launch a Senate bid after Tuesday morning.

Governor Rick Perry will soon call a special election for the Texas Senate District 28 seat. It is expected that the election will take place in November.
