“Some good things to shop for this season are things like strawberries, cherry tomatoes, watermelon, peaches, zucchini and summer squash,” Jones said.
Jones also said that an affordable alternative to fresh produce is the combination of frozen and canned fruits or vegetables.
“Your canned vegetables and fruits, you want to make sure they don’t have any salt added. So, make sure you are looking for no salt added on the label,” Jones said.
“Also, your frozen fruits and vegetables are just as good as your regular fruits and vegetables. Just remember when you cook them to not overcook them, so we want a bright fresh color.”
Jones said it’s also important to make a plan before you head to the grocery store.
“Making a list is a great way to save yourself money, planning your menu for the week before you go shopping and that way you only shop from that list,” Jones said. “Don’t shop when you’re hungry because you tend to get other things that aren’t on your list or aren’t as healthy. So, that helps keep a healthy diet.”
