LUBBOCK, TX -- learned that investigators with the Lubbock County Criminal District Attorney’s Office raided the Smokin J’s location at 4400 50th Street Thursday afternoon. Officials later said search warrants were also executed at Smoker’s Choice in the 1900 block of 34th Street and two locations of Tobacco Road. The warrants were related to the sale of synthetic marijuana, officials said.

Officials said a clerk was arrested at Elemental Trading Company in the 7600 block of University Avenue. Officials also said more arrests could come if the sale of synthetic marijuana does not stop in Lubbock. The search warrants were based on undercover investigators being able to buy synthetic marijuana, officials said.

Investigators were seen taking materials from the Smokin J’s which stayed open minus the material seized by officials.

Earlier in the week D.A. Matt Powell threatened to crack down on businesses that were selling synthetic marijuana. Powell was personally on site for a time during the search and seizure.

Activists with a group called WASP – Warriors Against Synthetic Pot – were also on scene at Smokin J’s They supported the D.A.’s decision to raid the business and said it was a step in the right direction. WASP has said in the past that synthetic marijuana can cause serious injury or death. EMS has also said synthetic marijuana has prompted – at times – up to five people per day going to the emergency room.

An employee with the business threatened to sue our photojournalist for covering the story.
