LUBBOCK, TX (PRESS RELEASE) -- The Neighborhood Services Unit of the Lubbock Police Department has recently changed its title to the Community Intelligence Unit. The title change is a reflection of the continued expansion of the educational programs and positive response from the community. The Community Intelligence Unit is comprised of 5 segments: Alarm Ordinance, Crime Analysis, Public Information Officer, Sex Offender Registration, and Mobile Operations. With a combined effort, the five segments also create and promote the community education programs. A brief outline of the duties of each segment follows.

Alarm Ordinance Unit
The Lubbock Police Department responds to approximately 18,000 alarm-related calls per year, over 95% of which are false alarms. False alarm calls can take time and resources away from calls where police services are actually needed. The Alarm Ordinance Unit enforces the City’s Alarm Ordinance with the intent of reducing the number of false alarms received thereby avoiding needless danger to the community and our police officers. The unit interacts with citizens on a daily basis and tries to resolve issues between citizens, alarm companies and/or police officers.

Crime Analysis Unit
The Crime Analysis Unit of the Police Department assists the community in several ways. The Crime Analysis Unit researches neighborhood issues, such as calls and reports, when citizens have a complaint about ongoing crime in their area. Staff also communicates with other divisions of the Police Department and other agencies to try and resolve these issues. The Crime Analysis staff currently provides crime statistics and information to businesses relocating or building in our community. Software for predictive analytics and geographic mapping will soon be utilized by the crime analysts allowing our agency to predict where crimes will happen, versus respond to where crimes are occurring. The community will also benefit from this software, which will allow the public to view current crime data online.

Public Information Officer
The Public Information Officer is the spokesperson for the Lubbock Police Department and coordinates the exchange of information with the media and citizens of Lubbock. It is the responsibility of the PIO to provide information to the media and public by assisting news personnel at the scene of incidents, arranging news conferences, distributing press releases, coordinating the release of authorized information and community events, as well as emergency alerts and general community information.

Sex Offender Registration Unit
The Sex Offender Registration Unit disperses public information to the community regarding registered sex offenders, their crimes and their risk levels. This unit also enforces both Sex Offender Registration laws and the City’s sex offender ordinance, and works with other agencies as well as the public to address these issues. This unit informs the public about registration laws and practices and investigates offenders who may be out of compliance. Staff coordinates home checks for offenders living within the city limits to validate that they are in compliance with current laws and regulations.

Mobile Operations Unit
The Mobile Operations Unit supports Lubbock Police activities, administration of programs/community events, training, as well as emergency operations by supplying the community with a mobile command center which provides professionals trained in dealing with multiple situations, events and education.

Community Education Programs
The Community Intelligence Unit provides the community with numerous free programs such as internet safety programs for children of all ages as well as their parents, Stranger Danger, children’s fingerprinting, general crime prevention, fraud prevention, home and business safety programs and Neighborhood Watch groups. In addition to the community programs, CIU assists with National Night Out, National Missing Children’s Day, Back the Badge and numerous other community events. For each program CIU sponsors, specific informational brochures are distributed to spread awareness to the community about the agency and the services CIU can provide.
