LUBBOCK, TX -- A Lubbock-based group, the Hebrew Roots Discover Center, expressed concern on Sunday that tensions and violence in the Middle East could get worse.  U.S. government officials expressed a similar concern.

More than 150 Palestinians lost their lives in recent days in an exchange of rocket fire between Hamas and Israel.  Hamas has continually fired into Israel and Israel has fired back.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, told CBS News, “I want your audience to imagine what it would be like if all the cities of the United States … would be in bomb shelters, with a minute to a minute and-a-half red alert warning to get in to those shelters.”

“That’s what we’re experiencing right now as we speak,” Netanyahu said.

Maen Rashid Areikat with the Palestinian Liberation Organization took issue with Netanyahu, saying, “The root cause of the issue … is ending the Israeli military occupation of the Palestinian people.”

Back in Lubbock, David Moody, a cofounder of Hebrew Roots Discovery Center, said, “We want our friends to remain safe, and we want the sites in Israel to remain protected as well.”

The center sends money every month to certain people in Israel: Holocaust survivors, the poor, and Jewish Christians (or Messianic Jews to be more precise).

Since 2008 Moody and the small group of Lubbockites with him have developed friendships among the people they’re trying to help.

“We travel to visit them as often as we can – yearly,” Moody said.  “We visit them, stay in their homes.  We enjoy a friendship and a spiritual relationship with them.”

“It’s a strong emotion.  We have been to the bomb shelters,” Moody said.

When asked what people can do to help, Moody said, “You pray for Israel.”

“You pray for the peace of Jerusalem.  Prayers are very powerful.  God is protecting that land.”
