Lubbock Ranks Among ‘Most Affordable' College Towns in the US

LUBBOCK, TX -- Lubbock is the 13th most affordable college town according to a list published last week by a website called “Great Value Colleges.”  The website analyzed the cost of living for 50 cities and claims to be “a free resource for students to evaluate college living expenses.” 

“Many kids dream about living in a great college town,” said editor Autumn Naugle. “This resource is designed to help the value-conscious among them achieve this dream and stay on budget.”

According to, the average cost of a one-bedroom apartment in Lubbock is $626.  The article mentioned Texas Tech University and Lubbock Christian University by name. 

Other Texas cities on the list are Waco at number 12, Houston at 29, Nacogdoches at 31, San Marcos at 47, and Austin at 50.  The number 1 most affordable college town on the list is Cookeville, Tennessee – the home of Tennessee Technological University.

1. Cookeville, Tennessee: Tennessee Technological University
2. Conway, Arkansas: University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College, and Central Baptist University
3. Louisville, Kentucky: The University of Louisville
4. Memphis, Tennessee University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the University of Memphis
5. Murfreesboro, Tennessee: Middle Tennessee State University
6. Omaha, Nebraska: University of Nebraska at Omaha, Creighton University, College of St. Mary, Grace University, and Metropolitan Community College
7. Tulsa, Oklahoma: The University of Tulsa
8. Ashland, Ohio: Ashland University
9. Cedar City, Utah: Southern Utah University
10. Jonesboro, Arkansas: Arkansas State University
11. Nashville, Tennessee: Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, Tennessee State University, Lipscomb University, Fisk University, Aquinas College, and Trevecca Nazarene University
12. Waco, Texas: Baylor University
13. Lubbock, Texas: Texas Tech University and Lubbock Christian University
14. Knoxville, Tennessee: University of Tennessee
